Activities of KVK

Prakasam Krishi Vigyan Kendra is a farm science center of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, managed by an N.G.O., Grama Nava Nirman Samithi established in 1992 with Head quarters at Jammikunta of Karimnagar district, serving the farming community in the fields of Agriculture and allied activities.

Jammikunta is situated on the main Railway line, 40 km. Away from Warangal towards Delhi. The district Head quarters Karimnagar is 52 km. from Jammikunta.

Keeping in view of geographical situations, cropping pattern, problems and thrust areas of the farming community, KVK is working on following objectives:

  1. To improve productivity in Agriculture and Allied enterprises.
  2. To generate employment for Rural Youth in Agro, Agro based and Non-farm sector.
  3. To improve the socio-economic conditions of Rural community
  4. Production of quality seeds and planting materials

Mandates of the KVK

  • On-farm testing to identify the location specificity of agricultural and allied technologies under various farming systems.
  • Front Line Demonstations to establish its production potentials on the farmer’s fields.
  • Training of farmers to update their knowledge and skills in modern agricultural technologies and training extension personnel to orient them in the frontier areas of technology development
  • To work as resource and knowledge centre of agricultural and allied technologies for supporting initiatives of public, private and voluntary sector for improving the agricultural & animal husbandry and fisheries economy of the district
  • In order to create awareness about improved technology, a large number of extension activities will be taken up. The seeds and planting materials produced by the KVKs will also be made available to the farmers.

KVK has six major disciplines viz., Crop Production, Plant Protection, Horticulture, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Home Science.

Infrastructure

  1. Well established instructional farm in an area of 16 ha.
  2. One Seminar Hall with 300 member’s capacity.
  3. One Mini Training Hall with a capacity of 40 members equipped with A.V. Aids
  4. Library cum small Agricultural Technology Information Centre
  5. Soil Testing Laboratory
  6. Farmers Hostel with a capacity of 40 members
  7. Computer Lab with Fax and Internet connectivity
  8. One Air Conditioned Guest house

KVK has developed 10 Demonstrations Units

  1. Vermiculture and compost
  2. Nellore brown sheep
  3. Giriraja poultry
  4. Perennial fodder crops
  5. Kitchen garden
  6. Murrel culture
  7. Medicinal Plants
  8. Azolla
  9. Composite fish culture
  10. Horticulture Nursery

Instructional Farm:

  1. About 10 ha.area is under instructional farm. Cultivation of different varieties with different technologies on major crops of the district.
  2. Developed Horticulture block with Mango plantation with Drip irrigation
  3. Other Activities
  4. Production and supply of quality seeds, fodder saplings planting material, Fish fingerlings, Vermiculture & compost and Live stock to the farmers.
  5. Conduct of Vocational training programmes to Rural Youth (Men & Women)

Literature / Agricultural Information material developed

  1. Literature developed on different pest and disease control measures in different crops of Agriculture, Horticulture, Fisheries and Animal Husbandry.
  2. Developed A.V Aids on different Agriculture and Allied technologies in local language.

Linkages

KVK maintains functional linkages with National, State and District level institutions & department in the fields of Agriculture and allied activities for technical information, Joint diagnostic visits, Campaigns, trainings, demonstrations, Extension activities and implementation of Programmes and Projects.

Irrigation facilities

Karimnagar district has been identified as intensive agricultural economic zone. The total irrigated area in the district constitutes 50.78% of the total cropped area. The irrigated area under wells accounts for 99,369 hect. following by the tanks, kuntas 65,122, canals 54,642, Medium Irrigation 17,574 and lift irrigations schemes 2,061 hectares.
